I mean, they finally get Anarchy Reigns here in the USA, they have today’s game released back in February 19th of this year, Wonderful 101, and they are currently working on Bayonetta 2. Not to say that I haven’t seen them this busy before, since in 2010, they had Bayonetta and Vanquish come out here in the states and both games are super fun. It is pretty amazing to see that they really haven’t made a bad game. Sure, that DS game they made was received with mixed results, but that could be because of the company that helped them was mostly in charge of it. I don’t know, but if you really don’t count that game since they weren’t fully behind it, they don’t have a bad game. Madworld, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns, and now we have Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. I remember in 2011, when the trailer for this game was shown at the Spike VGA Awards, everyone got so upset saying that this isn’t a Metal Gear game and all that junk that you could get pages full of on the internet. I mean, first of all, Kojima and his team didn’t really know what to do with this game. Some people didn’t like the video of him saying that he and his team were basically going to shut this game down unless they could find a solid design choice for the game’s mechanics. Luckily, they hired one of the best new developers of the past decade, Platinum Games, to make the game. Plus, for a developer’s first time tackling an already preexisting franchise that isn’t one of their own, I think they did a fantastic job! Even with all of the minor little annoyances, this is one of the best games of 2013 and should be in any gamer’s collection.

Let us get started with the story. The story takes place a couple of years after Metal Gear Solid 4, and you play as Raiden, voiced by Quinton Flynn. While on an escort mission protecting a prime minister in Africa, they get ambushed by an enemy group, who of course want to kidnap and kill said prime minister. After fighting off the enemy’s Metal Gear Ray, because you know, why not fight a Metal Gear in the first 5 minutes of the game, Raiden gets his butt handed to him by one of the two other cyborg ninjas that staged the whole ambush. After some time upgrading and apparently replacing his entire bottom jaw, he sets out to get revenge on this organization and plans to save the world from yet another tyrant’s desire to rule the world. The story is basically filled with everything that you can put on a “story elements in a Metal Gear story” check list. It’s got some good characters, political themes, and everything, like I said, you can find in a usual Metal Gear game. However, it does have a bit of fun humor thrown in from time to time, which is great. The story is solid, don’t get me wrong, but the subtle humor thrown in from time to time does give this overly serious story some personality, and it does have some fun characters, ranging from Raiden to some of the bosses. This is even more interesting, since Platinum Games isn’t really known for their amazing stories within their games. I will say this though, that I wish they could have made the game longer. The story moves so quickly that it can be a bit hard at times to really pay attention to it.

The gameplay in Metal Gear Rising is an action game, but don’t think of it as a Bayonetta or God of War action game, it is more along the line of Batman Arkham City where you have a solid mix of stealth and action gameplay combined into the usual over-the-top nature of both the Metal Gear franchise and Platinum Games. You can literally sneak your way through this game, or go in guns blazing and not be punished by it due to the game’s great and fleshed-out combat system. And I mean it, you won’t be punished, unlike in other games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution that says you can go guns blazing or stealth your way through the level, which is a bloody lie. In that game, you NEED to stealth your way through, due to you having to manage your weapons and having to deal with a boatload of enemies in each room. Anyway, the main gimmick in Metal Gear Rising’s combat is this slice-and-dice mechanic where you slow down time and slice-and-dice your enemies. This is kind of crucial to a certain extent, since you need to master this mechanic to do some side objectives, like slicing off left arms for upgrades. This even comes with certain boss fights that need that slice-and-dice mechanic used on them. Within the game itself, you will find healing items, secondary blades, secondary weapons, unique weapons, VR Missions, and unlockables that will keep you playing over and over. That is good, since this game is about 5 hours or so, and unlike Vanquish, this game has many reasons to replay through the game. Oh, and of course, Platinum Games made sure to have some fun boss fights!

Graphically, it’s very good-looking, and it runs at a nice solid pace with no slowdown that I could spot when playing on my PS3. In my opinion, the soundtrack is memorable. It had some really good tracks for the bosses, so whoever did the songs for the bosses, freaking kudos to you guys! The voice acting while having some solid moments is a bit on the flamboyant side, to where it is kind of hard to take the story seriously, but it’s good, and you can tell they were having fun with the script and their characters. You have to put yourself in the mindset of a Platinum Game’s game, and know that the voice overwork is going to be a tad silly, but then again, it is a good kind of over-the-top, since it matches the action on screen, which is also over-the-top.

So, what is wrong with this game? For me personally, not a whole lot is wrong with this game. During the early goings, the little side quest of slicing off the left arm of certain soldiers was a bit tedious, but once you master the slicing-and -dicing mechanic, and the combat in the game, it can become a breeze. Heck, a lot of the little side quests that you encounter in the game, like not getting the captured civilians killed, can be a bit tricky, but just practice and you will be doing these side objectives with ease. Even though I said this game is basically Batman Arkham City, but with a slice-and-dice mechanic, the stealth mechanics are mostly just walking up behind an enemy and then doing an instant death move on them. While I don’t mind the stealth mechanics being rather simple, I do wish you could cling to walls and crouch to sneak up to enemies. Then again, the main theme of the game is to not really block and stealth your way through, but to keep pushing through and attack, though if you play on the harder difficulties, you will NEED to sneak past the enemies or else you will be welcomed with your butt being kicked. I also feel like the final boss can be slightly too long. However, I find it hard to hate the final boss, due to how what-the-H-E-double-hockey-sticks the final boss really is. I guess I think it goes on for a bit longer than I want it to because the first part of the boss fight is of course fighting a giant Metal Gear because you know, why not? You then have to fight the guy who pilots it, and you can’t hurt him. Usually when these kinds of boss fights happen, where you are either meant to die or to win, they are when there is no HUB on the screen. Your character moves differently, or something happens in the cut scene before the fight happens. Well, even though you are given full health, all of your moves, and you control him like you would at any other point in the game, still, you aren’t able to hurt him for two fights in a row. It is only after you get a special sword from a fallen boss that you are able to hurt him. It’s a bit tedious, but once you get to fight him, the final boss is satisfying. I also wish there were more bosses, but I am happy with how many they have in this one game. It’s just that the first boss you fight is amazing, and while the others are amazing also, I wish there were more bosses like the first one later on in the game. My final complaint has to do with the camera/targeting. This is just a minor gripe, but the camera can be a little finicky and the targeting could have been better

Despite all of these minor little gripes, Metal Gear Rising is a fantastic game. Sure, it might not be Metal Gear Solid 3 or 4, but it isn’t trying to be. It is a spin-off title and not meant to be taken as seriously, or meant to be on par with the main series. This isn’t Metal Gear Solid 5! This is Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. I would highly recommend picking this game up and this is coming from a guy who hasn’t really played all of the games fully and is more along the line of a guy who loves playing action games. You can either get the normal copy, or shell out a good chunk of change for the Collector’s Edition. Either way, I am glad to have played this game and to see that Hideo Kojima wants to do a sequel with Platinum games. Well done, Kojima and Platinum Games!

I swear if I were ever going to make a fast-paced action game, I would hire these guys to make it. They have been incredibly consistent with their games and they really do not have a bad game in the bunch. I love them all. Even though I said that their fast-paced shooter Vanquish was the most disappointing good game of 2010, I would still highly recommend it over a lot of games that have come out these past couple of years. It has actually crept up into my top 30 favorite games of all time. They have a creative outlook to action games and there are not a lot of companies quite like Platinum Games. They are also very good at keeping up their quality in games, and I can’t say that about a lot of companies. For example, Bioware’s Dragon Age Origins was highly praised, but its sequel was rather weak and disappointing compared to other fantasy RPG’s that were released in 2011. By the time this review is out, Platinum Games’ next game, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance for the PS3 and 360 will be out, and I will be reviewing that soon, so keep on the lookout for that game. As of now, let us start with one of the best games of January 2013, Anarchy Reigns. This title alone is unique, it is a 3D brawler with the Platinum Game’s flare, but it also has multiplayer. We really haven’t seen this before. Sure, fighting games do have online multiplayer, but Anarchy Reigns isn’t a fighter, it is a 3D beat em’ up. It reminds me of how unique God of War Ascension’s multiplayer is, since that game is an action game with its own flair in the multiplayer gaming. I appear to be getting sidetracked with this review so let us begin the journey through the roads of bloody knuckles with Anarchy Reigns.

The story is interesting in the sense that it has two different sides to it. The black side of the story revolves around the main hero of Madworld, Jack Cayman, who is voiced by the ever so wonderful Steve Blum who is a chaser (a.k.a bounty hunter) in search for a man named Maximillian Caxton, voiced by Robert Pine. The white side revolves around a Bureau agent known as Leonhardt Victorian, voiced by Jon Curry, who is also searching for Maximillian, along with fellow agents Sasha Ivanoff, voiced by Kim Mai Guest and Nikolai Dmitri Bulygin, voiced by Zach McGowan. Along the way to find Maximillian, they meet other bounty hunters and other colorful characters, from Platinum Games’ previous title, Madworld, to new characters made for this game. While the story isn’t too much of a big deal, it is enjoyably corny. It has a lot of charm of a grindhouse film with its overly eccentric characters that are memorable and fun. I know I should criticize Platinum Games for not stepping up their storytelling, but I think I’m going to give them a pass here due to how much fun I had with the game’s story and gameplay.

The gameplay is essentially a 3D brawler where you go through the single-player campaign as either Jack or Leonhardt, and bash your way through enemies, taking on side missions, and main-story-progressing missions. A fun thing about the single-player mode is that during different parts of the game, you get to play as the other bounty hunters or other characters you meet, for a mission. Each side mission for both campaigns is different, so it doesn’t feel like you are going through the same campaign with just a different character. The combat mechanics are solid. You have your light attacks, strong attacks, throws, blocks, dodge rolls, dash attacks, and the game’s main appeal in combat, finisher weapons. The finisher weapons are like Jack’s double chainsaw arm or the Black Baron’s sexy fists of fire that do major damage to the enemy and can finish them off. You can also pick up items from health pickups, guns, and shields to name just a few. Overall, it will take about 10 hours or so to beat both campaigns and maybe shorter, depending on how good you are at the game’s fun combat system. Outside of the main campaign, you have a beautiful amount of violent multiplayer options where you take the game’s combat system online with different modes like deathmatch, team deathmatch, survivor, a unique sports mini-game multiplayer, and you get the idea. Just take any multiplayer modes you have played in a shooter, and put them in a 3D brawler. Luckily, each brawler does play differently, and there is a bit of strategy on how to tackle other brawlers that might have advantages over you. For me though, just pick a brawler that you enjoy (I play as Big Bull), and have fun! Oh, and if you beat the entire single-player campaign, you can play any level with any character! That is awesome!

The graphics are great. The game engine Platinum Games uses is always a very solid engine. The character models are of course overly exaggerated, but fun, and they give the game a unique look. The voice acting is entertaining. You have a good number of voice actors from Steve Blum, Kim Mai Guest, Yuri Lowenthal, Rick D. Wasserman, Arif S, Kinchen, and you get the idea. The music soundtrack is once again totally awesome with a huge amount of rap songs, and from what I can tell, are all underground artists like the ones in Madworld. It just gives a lot of the fights a flair that no other game can give.

So yeah, I just praised this game to high heaven, but what is wrong with it? Well, this game is super fun and entertaining, but I would feel bad if I didn’t mention this game’s flaws. First up is the camera. While it is better than Madworld’s camera, that isn’t saying much. I feel like it is too close to you. I also feel like some of the big bad enemies should have been toned down in difficulty. Sometimes, after getting rammed or kicked by a giant mutant or a kick boxing robot, it is hard to get back up in time to dodge their attack and counter attack since you keep getting hit multiple times without having time to dodge. I also wish some of the bosses on easy mode were a bit tougher. I also have to point out that when this game came out, Sega didn’t do any TV ads or internet ads to advertise for this awesome game. You see, Sega, this is why Platinum Games didn’t sell well, YOU DIDN’T ADVERTISE THEM! No wonder why they are making games for Nintendo and Konami, they are companies that would advertise something else than just Sonic.

Overall, everything that is fun, entertaining, and enjoyable about this game covers up all the minor issues I had with this game. Plus, this game is cheap at the price point of 30 dollars or less. Yeah, it doesn’t sound cheap, but when terrible games can get the 50 or 60 dollar price tag, this is a cheap game, but don’t take its cheap price tag as a budget title. If there was ever a company to support for their unique and enjoyable games, you should support Platinum Games.

I respect him and think he is one of the greatest game designers on earth. He helped produce one of my favorite games from 2010, Castlevania Lords of Shadow, and of course, he is known for his Metal Gear franchise that has been around for more than 20 years. The reason why I say it’s easy to make fun of him is because of how he loves to have the stories in the Metal Gear games get filled with politics, espionage, and war. Even if you can make fun of the story within the Metal Gear world, the stories are solid and make you really invest your time in that franchise’s universe. There is no other franchise quite like Metal Gear, with its mix of stealth and action gameplay, epic bosses, some tongue-and-cheek humor from here and there, and amazing music. It is weird to think that Kojima HAS made other games. He made cult favorite games like Snatcher and Policenaughts. While I would love to try those games out, I don’t think I have the money or ways of getting both games, especially Policenaughts, since it is in Japanese. I had to look at another set of games he has worked on that came over here in the states, and I have found them, the Zone of the Ender Games. While it is a hugely flawed series with the first game being just okay, it is an interesting series to find out about, and now it’s easier with the HD collection out with the demo of Metal Gear Rising. Why not take a look? Let’s see if this HD collection is worth it.

I am going to tackle this like I did with the God of War Origins and do a short summary of the two games’ stories. The first game’s story revolves around a young boy named Leo Stenbuck, voiced by Remy Le Bouff, who also voices Leo in the second game. He is living in a colony in space. This game takes place about a hundred years in the future, by the way. After Leo’s colony gets attacked by an enemy force, he stumbles upon this game’s Gundam-like robot known as Jehuty. The main robots in this universe are called Orbital Frames, which are slick, slender robots that have, um, very phallic designs to them. I mean, the cockpit is where the, um, groin is. Anyway, Leo, with the help of Jehuty, must stop the enemy force known as BAHRAM from taking over the colonies and Mars. The second game begins a few years later from the first one, and stars an ex-BAHRAM pilot known as Dingo Egret, voiced by Peter Barto. He works as an ice miner, and while on the job, he stumbles upon a large steel box with the Orbital Frame Jehuty inside. After he finds this massive mech, BAHRAM decides to attack the planet he is on, and it is up to Dingo to take the pilot seat of Jehuty and once again save everyone. He gets the help of the first game’s protagonist, who now pilots an Orbital Frame named after the pilot in Gradius, Vic Viper. The initial problems that pop up with these games are the stories. The first game’s story is way too slow and the game ends right when it seems like it is about to get good. I never like it when stories are handled like this. It’s like when a game obviously has a cliffhanger ending to lead to a sequel or a DLC expansion. The second game’s story is better, with a better protagonist and what not, but that really isn’t saying much. It seems like the more I played, the more plot holes appeared that left me uninterested and not wanting to invest my time within the game’s story, which, in my opinion, is a game design flaw.

The gameplay in both games is in the form of a fast-paced action game where you pilot the Jehuty and fight multiple robot enemies. Well, that is kind of a lie. The second one is a fast-paced action game, while the first game is much slower in pace and in combat. The first game basically has you going to different locations in the colony and eventually getting to Mars. You have to complete certain tasks, like destroying all the enemy groups, or fighting a boss. Sometimes, you cannot progress unless you have a specific item with you, which means you have to go back to an earlier level and do something else to get the item to progress further in the game. The second game is much more linear, and while having some exploration features, is more of a linear experience. Both games have the same controls with the same sub-weapons that can be used to tackle different enemies or bosses. Sometimes, it’s mandatory to use a secondary weapon to take care of a boss. The second game is much more fun, since the enemies aren’t usually slow and boring, and are much more aggressive. The bosses are one of the better things about both games with great artistic designs to them, but they can vary in difficulty and fun, depending on what you would consider to be a fun boss fight. Overall, you get some side activities with both games, and both games in total will take about 12 hours or so. The first game is rather short, but seems longer due to some complaints I will explain later, and the second game took 6 hours for me to beat.

The graphics were nice looking, besides a few CG cut scenes in the first game looking a bit Claymation-style. The HD versions of both games do look great, which helps make the art style of the same artist who does the concept art for the Metal Gear games look awesome. I’ll admit though, the designs are still weird. I mean, yeah, I can see where they were going with the robot designs, but when the cockpit is where the groin is and when the robot is in flight-mode, the cockpit stands up like a um, well um, you get the idea. The music is also rather solid with a lot of solid techno beats. The intro song for both games and the HD collection intro-animated cut scene didn’t pull me in at first, but I grew to love it as time went on. The voice acting is, to say the least, terrible in the first game, but corny and enjoyable in the second game.

So, what is wrong with this collection and the games in general? Is the collection wonky with just one solid game and a demo of an even better game that was heading our way in the future? Well, yeah, it is, to be honest. The first Zone of the Enders game is just flat out boring and tedious. Nothing really picks up storywise until the end of the game, and once it gets interesting, the game ends. The second game’s story, while more solid, I couldn’t find myself investing in either since I just didn’t care for characters in both games. A lot of people had harsh criticism for the first game, like the first game was just a tech demo and the only good thing about it is that it had Kojima’s name on it and the demo for Metal Gear Solid 2, and I can see why people would say that. The first game is just average and nothing really worthwhile. It is slow and boring. That shouldn’t be the issue with a game where you pilot a giant flipping robot! It really shouldn’t be that hard. Oh, this game also has one of those things where in order to get the good ending, you need to not let this or that happen. Well, thank you game for telling me this…oh, wait, no it doesn’t! I hate it when games will give you a good or bad ending, but will not tell you how you will get either ending. The second game, however, suffers from being slightly tedious and having some of the same issues, with only a few tedious side missions, where the first game had a whole lot of side missions you had to complete to progress. Of course, it never tells you where you need to go to do that side quest. It is extremely obnoxious having to fly around to different locations in the first game to complete side quests that aren’t fully explained to you. I don’t need my hand held, but I would like to know where the %$#@ to go! I’m sorry, but I hate it when games do this to me. The second game suffers from being probably too linear and having its own set of tedious missions. Adding to those missions and some unexplained things that you need to do, is a rather unbalanced final boss. The final boss in the second game is TERRIBLE! Again, a giant robot game and its bosses shouldn’t be that hard to make super exciting. I want to feel good I played through a great final boss, but nope! It felt like a chore to get the boss’s health down to zero. Granted, I liked the ending of the second game, but that isn’t a good enough reward for putting me through a tedious boss fight. I think this is what both games really suffer from, lack of any reward for the work you put into the game. Most characters aren’t interesting, the combat in the first game is boring as heck, and it can sometimes feel like a chore to play through both games. Granted the second game doesn’t suffer as much from this problem of giving the players rewards, but it is still an issue. I know this whole reward system seems like an minor thing, but if I want to play through your game, you have to give me a good reason to make me want to play it over and over, and I honestly can’t find myself playing these games over and over.

Overall, this is a decent collection of games, but I think the main redeeming thing about this collection is that the second game is more solid than the first one, and it has the demo of a much better game. If you haven’t picked up this collection yet, I would get the limited edition if you can. It has some stuff that makes up for the bland and boring first game in the collection. If you just want to check this collection out, rent it or get it on the cheap side. I do hope that the third game that is currently being made by Kojima himself is better. It should be since he is using his new game engine that the new Metal Gear Solid is using. Sadly and admittedly, as time goes by, the novelty of this collection will wear thin with gamers probably just want to play the second game. Sure, you get a demo of Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, but by now you will probably have a copy of this full game, making the demo useless you want to do a video on how different the demo and final game are from one another. Even though I ended this review being rather negative on the collection, do check it out since the second game is really solid and worth playing. Let us hope we can pilot a new robot in the near future in the Zone of the Ender series.

This collection gets a 7 out of 10.

Heavy Metal Gamer: Kirby's Adventure Review
